One of the easiest and most noted steps to securing your WordPress website is to keep the WordPress core updated to the latest version. But, whether you manage just a few WordPress websites or many, it can quickly become a daunting task to login to your Admin section and verify that you are running the latest version.
Isn’t there an easier way?
Why certainly!
If you use Chrome as your browser, there’s a very simple way to verify that information
Install the Chrome Meta Generator Version Check.
When the page loads, the red “W” appears to the right of the address bar if the WordPress version is older than the current version. Hover over the “W” to see the message.
If your browser of choice is Firefox (as mine is), you also have an option
You can use the add-on Firefox Meta Generator Version Check.

What Value Does This Provide To Me
You are probably thinking, “OK, this is cute, but what real world value does it have.”
If you’ll notice, I never mentioned being logged in to the WordPress Admin section. You’ll also notice that in the Chrome screenshot above, I chose the Dreamhost blog to look at. Dreamhost is not a client of mine and I don’t have access to their admin section.
Are you getting the picture now?
You can use this to find out the WordPress version of ANY WordPress website or blog. Then, when you find one that is out of date, you can approach the owner of the website about helping them update their website, secure it against crackers, and improve the integrity of their website overall.
Plus, if you can prove yourself valuable in those areas, you can make a pitch for more of their website work.
But What About Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, Or Other Browsers?
I couldn’t find anything of this nature for Internet Explorer – if anyone knows of something, please share it in the comments.
Since “I’m a PC”, I don’t use Safari, but in searching the Apple resources, I also could not find anything similar to these add-ons. If “you’re a Mac” and know of something, please post it here.
For Opera and other browsers, I don’t use them either, but I could not find anything like this. Please share this resource if you use another browser and know of something.
